WHAT TO WEAR AUTUMN WINTER 2011/12
COLOUR Forget the swathes of brown and rust that deluge the rails this time of year and cut the sartorial mustard with, er, mustard - rather than that shade they're calling pumpkin this year. It's ORANGE - and not many people can wear it. Team up your mustard jeans or whatever with something in navy and/or pale grey. Nice.
DOUBLE-BREASTED The d/b jacket continues to infiltrate. Even M&S, with its new Limited Colection range - a huge improvement on its generally dreary menswear - has a very neat black wool double-breasted number for a terrific £89 similar to one from Givenchy last year that cost rather more.
THE POLO NECK We haven't seen this for a while. I bought my first one (black) in the Sixties (yikes). This time around it must be fine knit with a high neck. Looks rather good under the double-breasted jacket (see above), which does present some limitations as to what to wear underneath it (no shirts with big collars flapping around, please).
SHOES. As summer turns to winter, we discard the deck shoe for something sturdier. This autumn/winter it's all about the brogue, whether as a shoe or a boot (in which, of course, you can tuck in your skinny chinos/jeans should you so wish).
THIS JUST WON'T DO...
Bow-ties: They've been plugging them for a couple of seasons now and are fine if you are channeling your inner geek (maybe you've been watching too much Glee or The Big Bang Theory). That said, Doctor Who in his latest incarnation (Matt Smith) will be sporting one, so who knows...(Press from London Evening Standard: March 22 2010).
